Groundswell 1.1
Groundswell Seeds Vol. 1.1
Groundswell – A movement of people using online and other ways
to connect, take charge of their own experiences, and get what they need---information,
support, ideas, products and services, and bargaining power ---from each other.
Clarion County and it's surrounding rural areas have a beautiful
natural landscape, wonderful industrious people, and Clarion University, a
great place to learn. There is a need to grow internally by working together
and by bringing more folks here to play, learn, work, and stay as new
residents.
Groundswell Seeds is the newsletter to stakeholders and the blog
of “VisitClarion”. Visitclarion is a mobile app designed to inform local
stakeholders and prospective visitors about events, amenities, and
opportunities.
We will provide information, ideas, products, services and many
opportunities for participation by local stakeholders as well as visitors from the outside world.
Some of our focus will be on Localism, growing businesses and
other activities through healthy, sustainable, local creativity, attracting
tourists to come and enjoy our many outdoor amenities, and recruiting folks to
attend Clarion University as incoming freshmen or adult students.
Our first theme on this “VisitClarion” blog is about Localism,
how stuff works, and it's the history of the founding of the Autumn Leaf
Festival by some local individuals in the 1950's. In future blogs, we plan on telling
the stories of other past successful ventures as well as current and new ones. https://visitclarion.blogspot.com/2020/02/groundswell-12.html
Here's a
nice article from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about winter activities planned
in the Cook Forest area. https://www.post-gazette.com/life/travel/2020/01/01/Road-Trip-Cook-Forest-winter-cross-country-ski-hike-Clarion-Forest-Jefferson/stories/201912230070?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter_PittsburghPG
Our last topic for this edition is about some very
good news about Clarion University including the CPA and accounting program success. Clarion graduates performed brilliantly compared to other universities in PA. http://www.clarion.edu/news/2019/december/Exceptional-preparation-of-Clarion-students-evident-in-CPA-exam-data.html
Clarion University partners with the local area to provide Community Fellows Grants. One example is a partnership with the AC Valley School District, and Blueprint Community to assist the development of the A-C Valley School Farm. The article below by Selina Pedi describes the project.
Clarion University Grows Fresh Community Ties - Selina Pedi
In November of 2019, Clarion University committed to helping one local community group dig into their dream of fresh food and fresh opportunities for area students. “We’re starting small,” says A-C Valley Blueprint Community Coordinator Selina Pedi, “but this initiative promises to grow into a huge benefit to the area. It all starts with one hand in the dirt!” The initiative Pedi mentions is the A-C Valley School Farm, a partnership between the ACV Blueprint group and the ACV School District that will see an unused two-acre plot at the edge of the school grounds transformed over the next three years into a living experiential learning space, with raised beds, an orchard, row cropping, hoop houses, and silviculture plots providing a supply of fresh food to the ACV cafeterias and the local community.
Clarion University demonstrated their belief in the power of school gardens to enrich and improve educational, physical, emotional, and creative opportunities for students, teachers and staff, awarding the ACV Blueprint group a Community Fellows Program Grant for 2020, which will provide a university intern over the busiest part of the summer season. While being a tremendous help to the fledgling farm, the intern will benefit as well, gaining real world experience in small-scale sustainable agricultural design and agribusiness planning, curriculum integration, youth engagement, nutrition and physical education, art and culture, not to mention emotional intelligence capacity building for both children and adults. Joseph Croskey, Director of the Clarion University Advising Services Center, notes “we love to do things that grow our community in beneficial ways” For Pedi, ACV Superintendent David McDeavitt, and the entire A-C Valley community, 2020 promises to be a year of new beginnings and new hope, and they look forward to growing a long-term partnership with Clarion University alongside the fruits and vegetables of the School Farm.
Grant awards based on information from Dr. Amy Esterhuizen, CU Director of Grants.
